06 Jul Wheat Grower Spotlight: David Schemm of Sharon Springs, Kan.

David and Lisa Schemm began harvest on June 26. Their operation consists of their two sons, Clay and Luke, and David’s father Vernon. They plan to wrap up harvest within the next five days.

The 2009 harvest season has brought luck to their area, as they did not receive any hail, drought or freeze damage. The family
has averaged 35 to 45 bushels per acre and hopes to get above 50 bushels per acre on a few fields. Their wheat has also brought test weights of 63 to 64 pounds.

The family produces hard red winter wheat, corn and milo while implementing no-till into their operation. In addition, they run three combines to harvest their wheat each summer.

David is currently the vice president for the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, www.kswheat.com, and serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Wheat Growers, www.wheatworld.org.
