Kicking off corn harvest

Emma Misener checks in to update AAWH followers on the 2010 fall harvest. The Misener crew is hard at work with corn harvest, but will take time out for family to celebrate the upcoming holidays. Emma even shares a favorite fall recipe.

Fall harvest is moving right along, and the end of corn harvest in the Rock Rapids, Iowa area is close to be completed—pending no breakdowns or trouble at the elevator. David and Verena’s job is also close to completion in South Dakota.  The weather has been beautiful, but it’s to take a left turn on Wednesday. We’re hearing snow is in the forecast for South Dakota and Iowa. I’m actually surprised no snow has fallen yet.

Our tentative plan is to move up to Dell Rapids, S.D., after completing here in Rock Rapids. We will also have to make our annual “parts run” to LaMoure, North Dakota to Ostby’s Shop. It’s a combine graveyard. When we get back to Elk City the combines need some preventative maintenance, but they don’t seem to want to fix themselves so we’ll have plenty to do this winter. We’ll also clean up a couple combines and get them ready for winter storage. We have a lot on our plate, but we always manage to get things done.

Joel and Olivia came to visit last week for the weekend. It was a wonderful surprise, and it’s always nice to see them. We had a great time, and many laughs. My sister Katie and her family, as well as my sister Elizabeth and family also came to visit and are staying until the end of the weekend.

We’re having the annual Misener Thanksgiving on Saturday in Canby, Minn., at my Grandma Alda’s house. We reschedule even our family holiday’s to fit everyone’s schedules, but I guess we’re probably not the only family that does that. It’s not the day that counts, but the entire family being together.

As we all get ready for Saturday I wanted to share a dessert recipe from my mom, who is on dessert duty this year. She makes the best sweets, and this is one of the goodies she’ll be bringing to the celebration. Maybe it will give you all an idea for your holiday treats.

Until next time, be safe and God Bless.
