Steph: Hands-free

You know what’s fun? Auto steer. Since my last post, I have shifted to driving combine for a different farmer north of our hometown. I’ve been utilizing all the fancy gadgets we have on our 2010 machine from GPS to clearing out the bushel count every time I fill a truck. I do need something to keep me busy though since the steering wheel doesn’t need my attention. Just give me a bag of popcorn and I’ll sit back and watch the show. Our wheat has been spectacular with yields averaging in the high 70s, protein between 14 to 17 percent and test weights around 65.

I’m the only member of our crew over helping this farmer so not only does that make me the only girl in an all guy crew but it also leaves me helpless and tool-less if anything goes wrong. When my draper belt on my header decided to act up, I had no choice but to call Dad to the rescue. I should have known this would happen once I mentioned our ‘luck’ of it not happening yesterday.

Harvest Tip: If you use auto steer while driving combine, it allows you to take pictures for All Aboard without it being a hazard.

I had one of the truckers sit in while I jumped out to take some shots.

Whoops. Nothing major but still a cause for Dad to make the 15 mile journey to me with the service truck.

The dust hangs in the air towards evening, causing us to quit shortly after sunset.
