Emma: Beginning of Another Year

EmmaIt seems like just yesterday that I began writing for All Aboard Wheat Harvest. Four years has since passed, and I am still doing what I love. How lucky am I?

When my father started Misener Family Harvesters back in 1971, I bet he didn’t think it would continue like it has. He made a great decision in 1976 when he married the farmer’s daughter and built a family to continue the legacy. Of course he was not alone. Momma was right there beside, supporting him through the ups and downs.

When he passed away in 2010, it was not only a shock to our family, it was a great hardship. My Momma continued this way of life because that is what Dad would have wanted her to do. Looking back, I don’t think she realized just how much she loved harvest. She may have continued because of Dad, but today she does it for herself. Harvest is in her blood. The same blood runs through my brother Dan and I. We don’t stay because it is a family business and we feel obligated to be here. We are here because we love it. It is just a perk that we get to work with family. How cool is that?

I hope this year will surprise us. Going into the fourth year of drought has taken a toll on us. My Dad always said, “We’re one day closer to the next rain!” and he is right. We are not in this business because it is easy. In fact, it is very stressful. We are doing this because we love it. It is in our blood. Someone has to feed the world, why not us?

I pray to God that he will continue to keep us in His care. To those who are fortunate enough to have a wheat harvest, I hope He keeps you safe in your adventures ahead.

Be safe and God bless!
