Wheat Grower Spotlight: Bob Beakley of Ennis, Texas

Beakley, Bob - Ennis, Tx_webBob Beakley is wrapping up the 2009 wheat harvest with one more day to go. Currently, Beakley and his son have cut about 1,275 acres of hard red winter wheat and 425 acres of soft red winter wheat. Beakley’s operation consists of one combine and one grain truck.

After experiencing freeze damage in April, Beakley lost about 50 percent of his crop. Although Beakley’s average yield has been 35 bushels per acre, he was disappointed after receiving the late spring freeze.

“We are pleased with our yields and tests weights considering the damage we received,” Beakly said.

Beakley also mentioned that the weather has been dry for harvest, but could really use some rain for their other crops, especially corn. Beakley and his son began harvesting on May 20, and will hopefully conclude June 6.

Bob Beakley is a National Association of Wheat Growers Director, www.wheatworld.org, and is on the Board of Directors for Texas Wheat Producers Board and Association, www.texaswheat.org.
