A slight cool down

As harvest begins to wind down in the southern regions of wheat country, temperatures were lower than average. The cooler weather may give farmers a break, but wheat in the northern regions of the wheat belt lags behind a typical year.

Texas – Harvest has been slowed to a near standstill in the Northern High Plains as tropical moisture continues to hang around. Most areas of the state have completed the 2010 wheat harvest and were able to finish before the moisture.

Kansas – For a second week temperatures remained in the lower to mid-90s, wheat harvest was delayed across much of the state due to cooler than normal temperatures and higher humidity. Wheat harvest is only at 92-percent complete; the northwest region of the state lags the most, as only one-half of wheat acreage in the region has been harvested.

Nebraska – Temperatures were below average, hovering around the lower 90s across the Cornhusker State as wheat turning color nears completion. Ripe wheat is at 40 percent and well behind the average at this time. Twenty-two percent of wheat has been harvested, slightly behind a typical year.

Colorado – With cooler than normal temperatures and random thunderstorm activity, Colorado remains behind average years. Winter wheat is 79-percent ripe, and 41 percent of the wheat crop has been harvested as of late last week. Spring wheat is 88-percent headed, and 21-percent turning color. The spring crop condition is rated mostly good.

Missouri – Wheat harvest is 98-percent complete, slightly ahead of schedule. The northwest district, however, is behind the rest of the state at 81-percent complete.

South Dakota – Dry and sunny conditions helped progress the wheat crop as spring wheat is 95-percent headed—ahead of an average year. Winter wheat is at 91-percent turning color, also slightly above average for this time of year.

Minnesota – Small grain development remains ahead of schedule. Spring wheat is 31-percent ripening, which is significantly ahead of last year at this time.
