20 Jul Harvest keeps moving north

Wheat harvest wrapped up in much of the southern regions of the wheat belt, while northern regions begin to see an influx of harvest crews. Overall the 2010 wheat harvest has been a success in most areas despite battles with storms, temperatures and delays associated with both. 

Texas – Wheat harvest is winding down and should be completed very soon in the Northern High Plains and Southern Low Plains. The remainder of the state has been completed for some time. 

Oklahoma – Triple-digit heat returned to Oklahoma allowing what little wheat was left to be harvested.

Kansas – Excessive heat across the state pushed harvest to the 99-percent complete mark. The remaining acreage is in the northwest region of the state where weather has been a factor, delaying producers in wrapping up this harvest.

Nebraska – Wheat harvested is at 44 percent. This is slightly behind the average and last year at this time. Wheat ripe is at 74 percent across the state.

Colorado – Wheat is progressing rapidly as 60- percent is harvested across Colorado and rated mostly in good condition. Spring wheat is 91-percent headed and 34-percent turning color.

Missouri – Wheat harvest is virtually complete; the only region not complete is the Boot region, where two percent of wheat remains.

South Dakota – Winter wheat harvest has begun with 33-percent harvested, ahead of last year when only four percent had been harvested at this time. Spring wheat continues to progress as 11- percent is reported ripe.

Minnesota – Spring wheat is advancing rapidly. Last year at this time spring wheat was reported at 13-percent ripening, this year it is at 67percent—a significant increase.

Montana – The weather has been cooperative for wheat. Eighty percent is reported in good condition.
