Emma: Homemade Chocolate Pudding and Ice Cream

I’ve had a few requests for the recipe for homemade chocolate pudding and ice cream that my Mom makes. It is DELICIOUS! It might seem odd, but you really do have to eat the pudding right off the stove, and hot. It’s a Misener tradition to eat hot chocolate pudding with ice cream. It is just so good.

Homemade Chocolate Pudding
6 Tablespoons cornstarch
4 Tablespoons cocoa
1/2 Cup sugar
2 eggs
6 Cups of milk

Combine cornstarch, cocoa, and sugar in a large sauce pan. Add eggs and stir, then the milk and stir, making sure there are no lumps. Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add 2 Tablespoons butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Stir until butter melts. Serve hot with ice cream.

Homemade Ice Cream
In a bowl, beat 6 eggs until they are well beaten. Beat 2 1/2 Cups of sugar and a dash of salt. Beat until sugar is dissolved into the eggs. Then beat in 2 pints of whipping cream. Beat well. Add 1 Tablespoon of real vanilla. Then 1 quart of half & half. Pour into your ice cream freezer, and fill the remaining space with whole milk. Place it into your ice cream freezer and pack with ice and salt. When it’s frozen and it doesn’t turn anymore, drain the water off, remove the motor, wipe the lid so you don’t get any salt in your ice cream. Then take off the lid and remove the dasher. Put the lid back on and put a cork in it. Repack with fresh ice and salt, put a towel over the top and let it rest as long as you can stand it. About 1/2 hour. Serve on top of hot pudding.
