Steph: Stealing our thunder

You know you’re in Oklahoma when the dirt is red. Most people would take that for granted but since we’d been pounding the roads for a solid two and a half days, for us it meant we were finally at our destination. Never had we been so anxious to see the city limits of Hobart, Okla. Even though we got there late in the evening, we were still bound and determined to get some cutting done.

Before we cut we needed to add the duals to our combine first…problem. The dealership we go to closes at 7pm, and we knew it would be at least 7:30 by the time we got there. We decided we would call ahead and see if we could maybe persuade them to stay open just a little bit longer and help us out. Turns out a shop full a mechanics works overtime for homemade cookies!

Putting our duals on after hours. Notice our New Holland combine is at a John Deere dealership. They had green spray paint out ready to paint their names onto the sides of our machine.

That was Friday. Now today we woke up all bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to take on the world that is wheat harvest. The yields are fantastic, averaging around 60 bushels per acre. Moisture is averaging 10.5 percent to 11 percent. The glory was short-lived though when those thunder heads started rolling in towards evening. Now we can only hope for those winds to pick back up again go dry things off after the buckets of rain that are currently pouring down on us.
