Emma: Bittersweet Field of Oklahoma

Emma_thumbnailI knew this year was going to be different, but I never thought it would be this different. Yesterday was the first day of harvesting in Oklahoma, and also the last. Dan and I drove the combine from home with the pickup pulling the header trailer, headed south. We arrived at the wheat field, tested the wheat and decided to start cutting. The moisture was 10 percent, test weight averaging 51 pounds, and around 14 bushels an acre. Better averages than expected to say the least. It was a bittersweet experience. I was happy to finally get in the fields, but it was not long enough. Here is a few pictures of our bittersweet day.

Emma: Dan the tester

Dan bites into the seed to test the moisture before we take it to the elevator to test. If it is too squishy, it is too wet.

Emma: cool colors
I love seeing the field when it is finished. When you cut back and forth, rather than the normal round and round, you get different colored paths in the field because of the way the wheat stubble is leaning. The darker path was cut coming towards us, the lighter is away from us.

Be safe and God bless!
