Z Crew: Garden City

headshot2Garden City, KS: Callie and I FINALLY have arrived on the 2014 wheat harvest run! Sunday, after a quick drive south and a dinner date in Scott City, Kan. with Jenna, we parked outside the trailer house and let out a huge sigh of relief.

After a run to town, nap and unpacking, I sat down to take a test for one of my online classes and Mom and Dad returned from the field. We said our hello’s and headed outside to watch a few post-Independence Day fireworks.

This morning Callie and I woke up with droopy eyes and a little confused until we realized where we were. Today was spent organizing, doing laundry, grocery shopping and a quick visit to the field. It turns out we’ll be headed to Colorado sooner than we all thought. Mom and Dad finished their last field this evening before the rain showers showed up. We hope to be headed to Limon, Colo. within the week!

Z Crew: First night sunset
The first night in Garden City Callie and I got to sit back and watch a beautiful sunset…while we were eaten alive by flies.

Z Crew: Pete
Pete sits in the field waiting for a load with storms clouds lingering to the north.

Z Crew: Last field in GC
The combine makes rounds in the last field at Garden City.

Z Crew: Panoramic
I’m very relieved to finally be in the field.

Z Crew: Dumping on Pete
The combine unloads on the Peterbilt so the grain can be taken to the elevator.

Z Crew: Wheat!
Wheat. (h)wēt/ noun: a cereal plant that is the most important kind grown in temperate countries, the grain of which is ground to make flour for bread, pasta, pastry, etc.

Z Crew: Rain clouds
Mom and Dad finished their last field just in time for another rain shower.

Z Crew: Dirt Cups
Callie and I made a classic “little kid” dessert to enjoy after dinner. Man, did they hit the spot! Dirt Cups: chocolate fudge pudding, crushed Oreos and gummy worms
