Third and Final Stop

Sweetwater, OK – Third stop on the harvest trail! We finished up near Sentinel, OK just in time before the rain. We went to Sunday mass the next day and enjoyed a much needed day off. As quick as the short break came, the work returned. The next morning was spent moving to our next stop near Sweetwater. We have been cutting here for two years now, but have done business with Mike for years. He is always a pleasure to work with. He trusts us to do the job in a timely fashion, and to do the best job possible. He sees the benefits of having a harvester come in and cut his crop. The biggest benefit for him is that it takes us five days to cut his crop where by himself could have taken him two weeks. This time difference costs money. The weather is never 100 percent predictable. A hail storm could take the crop, a rain could damage the crop and cause it to lay down, loose test weight, or create muddy field conditions. The quicker you can get a crop out, the better it is.
The wheat here averaged 32 bushels per acre, 58 pound test weight, and 11.5 percent moisture. For this sandy area of Oklahoma, this wheat did really well. A lot of his crop was cut for seed wheat. This means the wheat we cut this year is stored in a bin waiting to be planted for next years crop. Many local farmers buy their seed wheat from Mike. Its kind of cool to think that much of the wheat we see in this area, we cut the previous year. Because we have been doing seed wheat, this can take more time. We prefer to go to an elevator because they are set up to take wheat constantly, with a turn-around time that is quick. Hauling to a bin, especially since we hauled to three different places, takes longer. Each place we set up an auger and unload directly into the bin from the semi. But we are willing to do what it takes to get the job done!
