11 Sep Christy: Switching gears
Fortuna, North Dakota — It’s been a great year this year! We’ve seen a lot of great crops and have had an incredible crew to help us accomplish our goals.
Our year started a little earlier than usual, and that earliness didn’t stop until our move to Montana. After a short, fun break we dived right back in to working on wheat, lentils and peas. Moving farther east into North Dakota, we worked on the same and saw more lentils than I think we’ve ever done.
Our year isn’t quite done yet with crews still combining in Fortuna and by Ray, North Dakota. It looks like we will continue combining until calls stop coming in, or when we’re needed back to the south for fall to start.
Yields worked well in most places. We saw a dip in averages farther west in Kansas, but, overall, wheat yielded well. We combined one of the best fields ever in winter wheat in Montana. It was so great to see these yields for our farmers.
Weather conditions held out well with rain not delaying us too much in most areas. I’ve been home around Iowa for the last week and a half, and it was corn sweat hot and incredibly humid. Today we finally got some cooling rain. I think it’ll be good for crops.
After the first week of school, Zoey is happy to be heading north tomorrow. We’ll be heading back up to Fortuna for the Labor Day weekend to help out where we can. I’ve been making meals to freeze and baking to bring some good stuff up with us to our crews. Zoey made some really awesome looking brownies that I’m sure the guys will love.
Fall harvest is still a few weeks away. It’s hard to say exactly how far. I don’t think we’ll start combining any beans until after the 15th of September, but it’s hard to know. As far as right now, things look quite a ways off, but I did see some fields today that appear to have started turning. I’ll be curious to see how things look on the way back from North Dakota.
I’m really grateful for such a great summer. I’m grateful for our crew and for having a safe season so far. I hope things continue to be safe and prosperous for fall. I’m wishing the best for all harvesters and farmers.
As always, I want to give a big thank you to our sponsors. Thank you for supporting us and our stories to tell you how harvest is going. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share.
