02 Oct Sherry: Headed to Kansas
Hi, ya’ll! This morning we started our journey north to Kansas with our last load of equipment and the camper. We had a great first leg, but we didn’t even make it out of Texas. We drove 10 hours and only made it Anson, Texas. Y’all, Texas is HUGE! It doesn’t help that we live so far south in Texas. We practically start our journey from the Mexico border.
Our next day was interesting. We drove through three states (Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas) in less than eight hours. This trip was also a smooth one, other than the elevation change. Our elevation at home is about 50 feet above sea level. Here, where we will be harvesting, is a bit more than 3,300 feet above sea level. It’s a climb!
We arrived at our destination. The fellas unloaded equipment, and Whitleigh and I unpacked and organized our camper and prepared our campsite for what will be our home for at least a couple of weeks.
When the fellas arrived back to the camper, I was informed that they had forgotten to grab one of our JD StarFire GPS Globes. That created a problem for us, since our farmer wants us to yield map his fields. Thank goodness, Brian’s mother was able to ship it to us. However, waiting on this created a delay in us getting started. It was just a little delay as we did have to go to Pratt, Kansas, to pick up another JD corn header.
We had to fix a couple of small issues on the header. Then, we were able to get in the field with one machine. A few things had to be adjusted with the machine and header, but once it was squared away, Wyatt got to running his machine, while Wailynn had to wait for his GPS to arrive.
Wyatt got to run for half a day. Then we had a rain shower. We got shut down for late afternoon and the next morning. The same thing happened to us the next day. We were told it never rains in this area, until the harvesters arrive. Ha!
What we have been able to harvest so far has been below average due to a dry year. We are currently picking dryland corn. We will be getting into some irrigated corn and milo. Stay tuned until next time!
