10 Oct Sherry: Rain, rain, go away!
Johnson, Kansas — Hi y’all! We arrived, and the weather was good. That did not last too long! We were told it NEVER rains in southwest Kansas until the harvesters show up. Well, they weren’t lying. It rained a couple of days, so we were able to pick up our other new (to us) corn header from Liberal, Kansas. We were also able to get it hooked up and field-ready on our second combine. We even had some time to work on and update some last-minute things with the equipment.

Once we had some good drying weather, we were able to get back in the field. We were able to run one complete day and then half a day the next day, and then more rain came. We were picking dryland corn. The yield has been below average on the corn we were picking. The area suffered a drought this past growing season.

The backup plans since we had been rained out have included sightseeing! We couldn’t travel too far, but we caught up with some harvest friends of ours from Colorado who are harvesting rsouth of where we are. We met up in Liberal, Kansas, and we went to the coolest museum. It was the Mid-America Air Museum. The Mid-America Air Museum is an aerospace and aircraft museum. It is the largest aviation museum in Kansas and the fifth largest in the nation, so to my surprise it was really cool There are lots of amazing old aircraft to see. Our boys love classic and historic aircraft.

It looks like we are in the clear now! We were able to get a late start in the day and wipe out two fields of corn. This meant I had to get working on supper, but when I got to the camper to fire up my grill, I found that my grill wasn’t working. I was not a happy camper. Thankfully, I had plan B, so instead of grilled chicken I made chicken fried chicken with green beans and macaroni and cheese … which is my favorite to eat anyway.
