15 Nov Sherry: Combines to cotton pickers
Rosharan, Texas — Hi, y’all! We have been able to pick cotton for a few days now. The weather has been OK. We are dealing with late starts and quitting earlier. There is too much moisture in the ground and in the air for us to be able to start early and run as long as we would like to. Normally, our days would start at 8 with servicing the equipment (greasing row units, diesel, filling water tank, cleaning spindles, etc.) and in the field picking an hour later. However, the weather has us starting around noon and quitting as the sun sets, which is really early since the time change.
The cotton we are currently harvesting is about a bale and a quarter per acre, which is average for this area. The weather is going to continue to be the same for the next week, in the mid ’80s with high humidity. After that, there is a possibility of a cold front, which would drop the temperature a bit and decrease humidity for a couple of days. Humidity doesn’t change too much around here since we are about 30 miles from the coast.
Hopefully, we continue to have decent weather, so we can continue to pick this cotton crop. We are kind of itching (OK, it’s just me itching) to get back home. We will see y’all next time!
