12 Dec Christy: A season to remember

Worthington, Minnesota — This fall has been quite different from years past. We saw in the beginning what appeared to be one that would last into December, but weather conditions changed the story. We ended earlier than before, pretty close to Halloween, and not without at least one snow in the mix.

Weather was the main factor in determining how quickly our season would go. With hardly any rain in the forecast and temperatures staying well above the average for this time of year, we were able to run consistently throughout the fall.
Around home, beans went quickly. Yields averaged anywhere from 30 to 70 bushels per acre. It wasn’t a high-yielding crop, but I think we were pretty spoiled with the crop we harvested last year. There were a few replants to clean up toward the end, and some were not combined at all. The heavy rains during part of the summer really impacted crops all over our area.

Corn appeared to be far off from the looks when we returned around home, but the hot, dry weather this fall made it possible to continue harvest into corn immediately. There wasn’t any time to take a break in between, and our crew moved equipment over to corn quickly. Corn averaged overall between 185 to 225 bushels per acre.

Our crew this year was fantastic. We had quite a few returning employees from last year, and new crew from overseas who worked out really well. Zoey really connected with the gals on the crew this year. They still are continuing their travels thoughout the United States before the end of their journey in January. When we last checked in, they were checking out the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. It’s pretty cool to see their travels. I know we’ll keep in touch.

Overall, fall harvest was good this year. We certainly hope to see maybe some higher-yielding crops next season, but the weather couldn’t have been better to get done in record time. Thank you for following along with us this season.
