30 Jun Steph: Stuck in a rain rut
Remember the other day when I said we were finally able to get back in the field? I shouldn’t have exhibited so much excitement. The storm clouds must be attracted to harvest excitement these days because the following morning we woke up to the sound of rain on the roof. As of today, we have been in Lyons, Kan. for a full week and have only been able to cut 100 out of our 500 acres that we have here. Hopefully we will be able to get back in the field in the next day or two! We have had an abundance of time to look over the equipment with our down time and have everything looking sharp. Mother Nature, we are ready for some sunshine!
We have been running around Hutchinson and Wichita for parts and such to pass time on our rain days. The trailer is only so much fun, after all. On our way back from Wichita this evening, dad asks me if I have the Luke Bryan CD. I had to laugh at this because it’s a well known fact that I’m an avid Luke Bryan fan. Oh, and it gets better. He then asks if we can listen to it! It was a great ride home. Mind you, dad normally makes fun of me for listening to Luke Bryan but he has a new song on the radio now that he likes, so he’s coming around.
If you haven’t heard the song “Harvest Time” by Luke Bryan, I strongly recommend it. It certainly sheds a great light on what harvest is about. There is a line in it that says “Bobby’s mother pulls in the field, bringing us supper” where we are reminded of the days when my Grandma and Grandpa Osowski used to come on harvest with us.
Quote of the Day: “Winter’s a good time to stay in and cuddle, but put me in summer and I’ll be a…happy snowman!” -this is a quote from the hit Disney movie “Frozen”. This movie is a family favorite and we have all seen it a time or two. Quoting it has become a thing. We laugh because being from North Dakota, we are so used to the cold that once we begin harvest, we all “melt” for a while before we get used to the heat again.
We visit the combine each day, whether we are able to do any work or not.
Dad, climbing on up the ladder.
Hangin’ out in the wheel, no big deal.
Making a round to see how the wheat looks. Still too wet to cut.
Parking early for the night.
Kansas sunset.
Time to head home.
